There is / There are et la description
« There is » et « there are » servent à dire ce qu'il y a quelque part — une structure qu'on emploie dans presque chaque description. Sa difficulté est double : choisir entre singulier et pluriel, et ne pas la traduire mot à mot depuis le français « il y a », qui ne varie jamais.

Objectifs de la fiche
- Employer there is au singulier et there are au pluriel
- Construire la forme négative et interrogative
- Utiliser les prépositions de lieu (in, on, under, next to, behind)
- Décrire une pièce en quelques phrases
La règle
- There is + singulier : There is a table in the kitchen.
- There are + pluriel : There are two chairs in the bedroom.
- Piège : en français « il y a » ne change jamais, en anglais si. Il faut donc regarder ce qui suit.
- Négation : There isn't a table. / There aren't any chairs.
- Question : Is there a table? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. Are there any chairs? — Yes, there are.
- Les prépositions : in (dans), on (sur), under (sous), next to (à côté de), behind (derrière), in front of (devant).

Exercice 1
Complète avec there is ou there are.
- ... a book on the table.
- ... three windows in the classroom.
- ... a cat under the chair.
- ... two doors in the house.
- ... some water in the bottle.
Exercice 2
Mets à la forme négative.
- There is a bed in the room. →
- There are five pupils in the class. →
Exercice 3
Pose la question et donne la réponse courte.
- There is a garden. →
- There are two brothers. →
Exercice 4
Complète avec la bonne préposition (in, on, under, next to, behind).
- The book is ... the table.
- The ball is ... the bed.
- The school is ... the market.
- The pen is ... my bag.

- Exercice 5 — réponses personnelles. Vérifier l'accord singulier/pluriel.
Le corrigé est destiné à l'adulte. Laissez l'enfant chercher seul jusqu'au bout avant de l'ouvrir : c'est en corrigeant son erreur qu'il apprend, pas en lisant la bonne réponse.
Conseils aux parents
- Faites décrire une photo ou une pièce réelle : cette structure ne s'apprend bien qu'en décrivant quelque chose qu'on voit.
- L'erreur classique est « There is two chairs », par calque du français. Faites systématiquement regarder le nom qui suit.
- Les prépositions s'apprennent en manipulant : posez un objet sur, sous, derrière, et faites dire où il est.
